20-35 mm, brown w/a coating is short fine hair. Fore legs broad & spadelike. No evident ovipositor in female. Note two claws on pic #3, & 4 dots on thorax on pic #1.
Misc. Soils, East of Rocky Mountains from south Canada to Mexico. Eats plant roots, is a real problem in Bahia yards. Reportedly also eats ants, small worms, etc. Reportedly can make a guttural growling note, - mine was silent, but not in ground. Lives mostly underground but can fly well. 32771-6463
Pics 2 & 3 show cricket laying on it's back, in my palm... This one also would "seem to play dead, then suddenly move off quickly. Reportedly other close members do not show this trait.
