Piping Plover

Charadrius melodus

Description:

Short stocky shorebird with a tan body and yellow legs. During the breeding season the adults have a black forehead and band on chest, as well as an orange bill.

Habitat:

Open, sandy beaches.

Notes:

Piping Plovers are an endangered species of shorebird. We were lucky enough to go to the island at the time that the plovers were nesting, and some of the little guys were hanging out on the beaches that were still open.
