Sharptail Grouse

Tympanuchus phasianellus

Description:

Sharptail grouse are about the size of a small chicken.

Habitat:

Was once a very common bird that lived in grasslands; it now lives primarily in scrub grasslands.

Notes:

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has a number of blinds from which the public can watch these birds. The blinds are placed next to the birds' leks. A lek is a place where the males congregate in the breeding season and dance trying to impress the females. Great experience....
