Koala

Phascolarctos cinereus

Description:

This is Grace at the Taronga Zoo. She is eating gum tree leaves. Most Koalas spend 19 hours sleeping trying to digest leaves that actually have very little nutritious value and contain toxins. Koalas have a specialized gut that separates the useful components of the leaves. One way you can tell Grace is a female is because she does not have the scent glands on her chest.
