Hi - Kirkleatham owl centre is near Middlesbrough and they have great greys - was it there?
This species is unrecorded in the UK as a wild bird, but some are kept for displays. If it was indeed seen at the specified location please specify the circumstances under which you saw it, including whether or not it was a captive/display bird.
Similar to our Great Gray Owl, but likely has a different name in Great Britian
