Salmonberry

Rubus spectabilis

Description:

Bright pink flowers on woody, thorny canes, developing into orange to red raspberry-like berries that aren't very sweet.

Habitat:

coastal temperate rainforest

Notes:

After grasses, this is the first colonizer of clearings. The name comes from the berry's use to grace the first salmon caught in the streams in spring. These are late blooming this year, and pollinators are discouraged by the rain and cold.
