Giant wood spider

Nephila pilipes

Description:

The body of this spider is approximately 5-7cm in length, the legs double the length except for the shorter second-from rear pair. The body is thick and somewhat narrow, a dark color with light pattern, except the head which is also light. On the abdomen there are yellow markings and yellow bands at the base of the legs.

Habitat:

A hot, humid rainforest in central Thailand, near a large waterfall. A popular tourist destination, this spider and her web were directly in the trail where visitors walk to see the falls. Very lush environment.

Notes:

The photos show views of both the underside of the spider and the top of the spider.
