Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

Black and white checkered wings, white belly and the male has a red hood. He is up among the power lines about where I took a picture of the Pileated. He has a distinguishable call and is common in our neighborhood.

Habitat:

Woodlands and adapts readily to suburbs as long as there are trees. Sometimes people call him a red-headed woodpecker, but that is a whole different bird.
