Root bridge

Ficus elastica

Description:

huge fig trees whose aerial roots have been trained to cross seasonal rivers. they put a dead palm tree across the river and over years, trains the roots to grow across them.

Habitat:

monsoon forest

Notes:

the oldest root bridge is over 100 years old. sadly they are not maintained anymore and some of them are not safe to cross. I came to this part of India just to see the root bridges. the double decker root bridge was the highlight of the area. never seen anything like this anywhere
