fishing spider

Description:

This spider is one of the biggest I have seen in Maine. This one is missing a couple of legs, but seemed to be doing fine over the course of the summer, where it could be spotted hanging around the fish ladder near the dam.

Habitat:

along the dam and at the water's edge near a large freshwater pond

Notes:

Any species suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I'm anxious to see if its offspring will be back at the dam this season.

It is indeed a fishing spider. They can be huge, can't they? I'm not sure which species, but you could check this page and search through their results to see if one jumps out at you (no pun intended): http://bugguide.net/node/view/1985
