Portuguese man-of-war

Description:

61/2 to 7inches across; in the second picture is one very long tentacle

Habitat:

spotted washed up on the beach

Notes:

Very Interesting: while it appears to be a jellyfish, it is actually a colony of creatures. Unfortunately it is virtually impossible to rescue a beached man-of-war. Since they have nomeans of self-propulsion, if they are returned to the surf (very unadvisable to attempt) they will simply wash up again. Sadly, this one was very much alive and kept raising its "sail" in order to catch the breeze.

Very true, JakeFalci-peña . I grew up near the ocean and was warned early about their dangers. But it's always good to be reminded.
