Quokka

Setonix brachyurus

Description:

It weighs 2.5 to 5 kg and is 40 to 90 cm long with a 25 to 30 cm tail. it can climb small trees and shrubs. Its coarse fur is a grizzled brown colour, fading to buff underneath.

Habitat:

On Rottnest Island, it is common and occupies a variety of habitats ranging from semi-arid scrub to cultivated gardens.

Notes:

Spotted lots of quokkas on Rottnest Island, one of their last strongholds. They have no fear of humans. They would eat right from my hand and were a delight to watch. At one point I had 10 of them around me all eating the leaves I had given them. I've never seen such a friendly, relaxed wild animal.
