Garden Orb Spider

Araneus diadematus

Notes:

Yet another spot from my walk home today (seems it was a good thing my bike was broken!). As far as I can tell, this is a garden orb spider. A little annoying he was on the wrong side of the web (for me anyway), but interesting to see the underside all the same.

It is great when someone you know gets the recognition they deserve. Especially when you can bask in their reflected glory. Ha ha!

Thanks NayNay! And that's great for her, Doryreed, it's awesome when research in your department gets picked up by the media (for good reasons)!

Yeah she is really excited. She was on the BBC nature news too. :)

I agree spiders are amazing, I love to photograph them, but I also like to keep my distance :-) Need a better zoom lens lol. Interesting pic!

Yes, I agree, the story even got picked up by places like Nat Geo :) I bet that was awesome for her!

It was really groundbreaking stuff and she is very chuffed with herself at the minute. And rightly so. It is very cool.

He just wanted to give you a good morning face hug :D A spider saved me from a wasp attack once! The wasp was attracted to the bottle of juice I had, and as he was buzzing eratically around me, he flew into the wall of the building behind me, and right into a big ol' spider! The spider, realising this wasp was harassing a young lady, valiantly wrestled the wasp to the ground until it got so annoyed it just flew off. It was actually kinda awesome.

Haha! They are amazing creatures. One of the lecturers at my uni has recently discovered that tarantulas use silk from their feet to help them grip to vertical surfaces. They are awesome.

They are amazing, amazingly evil!

It's the way they'll be sitting perfectly still on the carpet, then suddenly run, full-tilt, straight towards you.

Woke up with an enormous spider on my pillow a few years ago, it was still, still, still aaaaaand SPRINT towards my face!

They're incredible, and I will happily photograph them, I just want them to understand my personal space :P

:P I really must be one of the only people who thinks spiders are amazing. When I go visit my dad, especially in the summer, one of the first things I have to do is collect and evict all the spiders that have accumulated over the months... No one else will even go near them!

If you look really close you can see a tiny hole on the abdomen; thats where they inject the evil gene in the spider factory.
