Staghorn coral

Genus Acropora

Description:

Staghorn coral spotted at the Agincourt reef on the Great Barrier Reef, like the previous spotting.

Habitat:

Staghorn coral occurs from 0-98 feet (0 to 30 m) deep. The upper limit is defined by wave forces, and the lower limit is controlled by suspended sediments and light availability.

Notes:

Staghorn coral is a favorite place for fish to hide; when disturbed they all duck inside the coral branches for protection.
