Celosia argentea var plumosa
Beautiful red tufting at the top of a reddish green stem
I am pretty sure this was not planted but sprouted among the entrance to one of the Communities I walk past in the morning. We used to have it in our yard in New Jersey.

I think it is Celosia argentea var. plumosa

It is in the Amarantaceae therefore is an Amaranth. I didn't realize that these annual amaranths (celosia) are also edible.
I'd say your ID is correct. You could add var. plumosa
That's my opinion.
Alice, this is a type of Amaranth, I think..
its edible..not the seeds..the young leafs and shoots are eaten in Europe steamed etc.. its like spinach!!
