Canada Darner

Aeshna canadensis

Description:

These big dragonflies are nearly seven centimeters (3 inches) in length. Eyes form a "shield" over the head and neck. The front thoracic stripe is deeply notched. Thoracic stripes may be blue, green or a combination.

Habitat:

Typically pond and marsh edges.

Notes:

These two dragonflies are in a "mating wheel". The male grasps the female's neck in his claspers and she bends her abdomen forward to receive a sperm packet.
