Ah, if he grew out of it that makes sense. The dorsal stripe is what I was going by.

Its a boy and he came right from a Massachusetts lake Cheshire to be exact, and he is in a tank he is also bigger now

That's a Southern Painted Turtle, Chrysemys dorsalis. Not the typical subspecies for your neck of the woods, but that does appear to be an aquarium.
