Spotting

Description:

The....flower(?) of a tree. The outside of it is brown and a bit hard, and at its top is what looks like the petals folding over, exposing an inner white part that sort of looks like the wrinkles on the brain, with a sort of gelatinous covering. In the third and fourth pictures, you can see the inner part of it, which looks like a tight curling of stalks. You can also see a hand in the fourth picture, for a rough estimate of size.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest.

Notes:

Found at La Selva Biological Station in Heredia, Costa Rica. I couldn't find the plant that this came off of, unfortunately, so I've been unable to find an ID so far.
