Muskrat

Ondatra zibethicus

Description:

Muskrats have short, but very thick waterproof fur. It's predominately brown with a black, vertically flattened tail. It is about 40-60 cm (16-24 in) long, including tail.

Habitat:

Ponds, rivers and especially wetlands where they feed on cattails and build lodges from vegetation and mud.

Notes:

I photographed this muskrat in a sedimentation pond just below my house.
