Actually India was never a part of Asia,it was lying between Kenya and Madagascar, when there was some natural event that lodged it into Asia , that is how the Himalayas erupted, Therefore it is not so surprising that the Flora and fauna of India are so similar to those of Africa and vicinity.

Tsetse flies really harass these lions. Besides if they loose their canines due to Hookworm disease or whatever, they are pretty much rendered helpless.

Great shot!

I remember I attended a talk on the DNA diversity of lions in Africa specifically on the difference of the west and central African populations with the east and south African populations. The researcher said (and if I remember it right) that the west and central African populations are more closely related to the Indian populations. Interesting, right?

In Gir Sanctuary what is almost semi desert habitat Lions seen mostly lying in shadow. I feel Masai Mara is a good forest habitat.

African Lion's habitat(Like Masai Mara) and Indian Lion's habitat(Like Gir) is so different.

Okay, I see what you're saying. I didn't mean to write Man at the end of my sentence, that was a type o.

I think Masai Mara can not be compared with any other National Park. Its habitat is far different from Indian Lions.

Gir is National Park. Besides in Mumbai city suburbs there is big breading center reserved for Lion Safari in Sanjay Gandhi Natonal Park. About 3-4 pairs of Lions are there and available 4 pairs and 7-8 cubs seen in Safari area.

Ashish, isn't Gir the only place to see wild lions in India? You think it's better than Masai Mara National Park? Masai Mara is one of the best places in Africa to see wild lions at a very close distance. Man

The tree was actually dead. So I'm not sure if it was an Acacia but it's very possible.
