The branches of the pollard willow are regularly cut at about 2 meters (6 to 7 feet) and (historically and still) used for various purposes. New branches will grow from the trunk and the trunk will get it's specific 'knot' shape. The knot offers a perfect place for small animals and birds to nest in.
Common in the Netherlands. Here spotted very early in the morning on a cold winters day.
Willows are often planted on the borders of streams so that their interlacing roots may protect the bank against the action of the water. Frequently the roots are much larger than the stem which grows from them.
