African ground squirrel

Xerus rutilus

Description:

This unstriped ground squirrel was spotted in an old churchyard in the province of Tigray, Ethiopia. This is the only species of ground squirrel found in Ethiopia. Tigray was one of the areas worst affected by the 1980s famines. A precious little guy.

Habitat:

Open woodlands, grasslands, or rocky country. Distribution: northeastern Sudan to northeastern Tanzania. Different species of ground squirrels are found in other parts of Africa.

Notes:

These animals live in colonies, but I only spotted one.
