Bridled parrotfish

scarus frenatus

Description:

A pair of male (light and dark green) and female (redish brown) bridled parrotfish, amid a school of other fish. The species grows to 47 cm in length. They all start as females and some of them change sex to become males.

Habitat:

MacKay Reef, Great Barrier Reef.

Notes:

Any help of IDing the other fish?

Got the id last night, from a dinner guest at our house, who actually did his Ph.D dissertation on scarus frenatus. Small world. ;)

He also thought the fish coming into frame on the left of the photo is Lutjans bohar.

Lori the flat ones are Acropora table coral :) Fan corals are soft corals such as gorgonians. The big knobbly coral in your picture looks a lot like Porites either P. lobata or P. lutea..

Marta, I only know the flat corals as "fan" coral. Is there a difference? There were also enormous brain corals at this reef.

The flat looking coral is commonly known as table coral (I don´t know the species)
