Description:

Member of the beetle family (order Coleoptera). Emits a cold light to attract mates or prey. The light is yellow, green or pale red.

Habitat:

Temperate and tropical environments. They like wet and wooded areas where there is an abundance of food for their larvae.

Notes:

In Ohio fireflies are only seen in the late spring and through summer. They hibernate during the winter.
