American Dagger Moth Caterpillar

Acronicta americana

Description:

Fuzzy yellow with long black 'spines'. Colors change as the caterpillar gets more mature. The skin underneath is bright green.

Habitat:

Decidious woodlands and forests.

Notes:

The black spines contain toxins that release when they are broken. The spines are actually hollow tufts of hair. The toxin will leave a stinging red welt.
