Eastern Lubber Grasshopper

Romalea microptera

Description:

Large black grasshopper. Typically I only see them solid black but came across this one that had some yellow to it. The second picture shows their pink wings. Although they have wings they can’t fly.

Habitat:

South East U.S.

Notes:

They are often a garden pest as they can eat a lot and often are found in large numbers as they have a nasty chemical that makes them distasteful to predators.
