Hmm, for now, better just put down Syphus spp. just to be safe until I have a better look at it.

Syrphids are often very similar. Many of them look almost identical till you get them under a microscope. This is a good site for photos. It is British but I think many are found in the states. It is a good starting point anyway. :)

Gee, thanks for the discussion! It helps me fill out the Oregon biosphere a lot!
I'll look closely at the abdomen next time I photograph one.

@KarenSaxton I don't think it is Eupeodes corollae as the markings on the abdomen meet in the center to form stripes. I think you are pretty close with Syrphus rebesii though. Could also be Epistrophe grossulariae or Syrphus vitripennis. Can't really tell from the photo how wide the abdomen is or what parts of the legs are yellow/black. It will be very tricky to get a 100% ID for this but good luck.

or perhaps eupeodes corollae, can't tell from the photos and both are from Europe, but then so is much of the flora and fauna on the Oregon Coast.
