Equus asinus
after seeing a real mule I have decided to change this spotting to a donkey.
Liz, male mules are always sterile but females occasionally do breed when crossed with a horse or a donkey - I am a mine of useless information!
"Mules are generally less tolerant towards dogs than horses are.[citation needed] They are also capable of striking out with any of their hooves in any direction, even sideways if needed."

Yes it is Liz which is why it is hard to get a scientific name for this little guy. I could put its hybrid cross which I might do
Thanks guys - this little guy is so friendly and has struck up a great friendship with my dog! Mule actually sees us and comes trotting over to sniff noses with Cali....I am greeted second!
