Painted Grasshopper

Dactylotum bicolor

Description:

Beautiful, bold, multi-colored pattern on large (20-35mm), black body. The young begin as black w simple yellow stripes.

Habitat:

Short-grass habitats and sparse, weedy vegetation

Notes:

The geographic distribution of this species is the Midwest to Southwest, but beginning every Summer North MS is swarming with these guys, with adults easily spotted in September. Are they a slight adaptation of the given species?? Beautiful sight whatever the case.
