Yes, of course, fungus would be the best category - what was I thinking! This is the only photo I have and sadly I won't be passing that piece of moorland any time soon to take a look at the underside. I'll keep your advice in mind for the next time, thanks!

You can safely put them in the "fungus" category. Without seeing the underside it's hard to know what genus they are. There's a possibility they are Agaricus, but just as possible something else. Do a spore print & take a picture of the gills and their attachment to the stem for better ID.
