Betula platyphylla
Similar to European Birch, but slightly narrower with more upright branches and chalky white bark. Native to Japan and Siberia, but propagated from an isolated Wisconsin seed source showing resistance to the bronze birch borer. Japanese White Birch is known for its bark peeling off automatically as it grows. The Chinese gave it an alternative name meaning "a white tree with a thousand layers".
Temperate or subarctic places of Asia: Japan, China, Korea, and Siberia.
