Earth-boring Scarb Beetle

Bolbocerosoma bruneri

Description:

13mm long, 9mm wide. Thorax orange with a black band along most of the posterior margin and a small faint mark near each later margin. Scutellum black. Elytra striated and orange with a broad black band covering most of the posterior margin, and a narrow black border along each interior margin. Head dark with orange setae. Legs and antennae orange. Underside orange, except for head.

Habitat:

Rural area near cattle feedlots, croplands and some small wooded areas.

Notes:

A strong flier, I caught this buzzing around the office door at work. Upon catching it it made a serious effort to squeeze out the side of my hand. I could feel the tarsal claws and the spurs on its front tibia, but it didn't bite or sting and tickled more than anything else.

Sweet! Do you know that the worlds biggest scarab beetle fanatics are in Nebraska? Brett Ratcliffe at the University of Nebraska heads something he likes to call Team Scarab.
