That would be a great pity. I remember seeing red squirrels as a kid but they have pretty much disappeared from England except for some isolated areas where the grey hasn't colonized.
To the best of my knowledge grey squirrels haven't invaded Switzerland yet but it is predicted that they will. This would be a disaster for the local red squirrel population...
They can be a bit of a pest with the feeders but I enjoy watching their antics! Don't you have grey squirrels in Switzerland? They are so common in England I assumed they would be all over Europe too. The reds are so beautiful but as you say, much shyer.
I lived in Washington DC for 2 years and I miss the familiarity of the Eastern gray squirrel. The European red squirrel is very shy and much harder to spot...
Thanks guys! I've had to stop putting out sunflower seeds because they are emptying the feeders as fast as I can fill them & burying the seeds in our lawn - I expect we will have sunflowers growing in all sorts of strange places next year!

Thanks Alice!
Nice Series. I saw both Red squirrels and black with white chests in Croatia, but they definetly seemed territorial.
