African Wild Dog

Lycaon pictus

Description:

The African Wild Dog is one of Africa's most endangered creatures, so it was thrilling to find this den of 8 six-week old pups in the Sabi Sands Game reserve. They were extremely active and playful, a joy to watch but a challenge to photograph!

Habitat:

Savanna and open woodlands

Wow... such an elusive and low-numbered creature! I have to admit, I am pretty jealous... not only did you see the wild dog, you saw them in their cutest form ever... GAH! Too much, I would have melted. Congratulations on having the opportunity to witness these animals be young and crazy, and thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Hi Daniele & Laura - they can be elusive indeed! Best places to see them include Kruger/Sabi Sands in South Africa, Chobe/Moremi in Botswana and Save Valley Conservancy in Zimbabwe. The puppies in their playfulness were attacking plants and this little guy was having a big contents with a small tree! Very amusing!

Wow, what a wonderful and rare find! Eek, African wild puppies... too cute! Fab photos Adam, I love the look on the puppy's face in the first one: "What the heck is this horrible green stuff?!"
