A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Adansonia sp.
It looks like a bottle. Rounded and fatter lower part and tapering, upper.
Mandu village. Madhya Pradesh. India.
Native to Madagascar,sub-Saharan Africa and Australia too I think.. the Baobab dots the landscape of Mandu. The fruit is harvested and sold so, I did not see any on the tree. I have posted a photo of the collected seed pods in a basketsand the seeds being sold in pouches. It is called Mandu ki imli (tamarind of Mandu). The Baobab is also called Khorasi imli. Khorasan is a historical region which lies mostly in modern-day northern/northwestern Afghanistan, northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Mandu had trading links with Khorasan in those days. Or is it a leftover tree from when we were Gondwanaland??? Either way I am happy to see it. I have seen one in Kolkata too, in flower. https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/19...

Wonderful notes too, Sukanya, as always.
In Australia, we have a similar species called the Boab Tree (Adansonia gregorii). Amazing trees. I also saw massive Baobabs in Southern Africa, probably the largest being at Vic Falls in Zimbabwe. I never saw them in flower, so lucky you :)
