Very wiry tree with sharp needles radiating 360 around the twig, having a blue cast, very thick growth in the face of winds that contorts away from the prevailing wind. The wood is exceedingly tough, not easily split, so withstands the wind with minimum breakage. This much in the wind it will never get very tall, but even 50 ft. back from the ocean's edge they can grow very large.
On colonized sand dune at the high-tide line, hit by heavy winds much of the time (winter winds are not unusually 90 mph), at the mouth of the Sixes River just above Cape Blanco.
Spruce boughs make the best firewood, spruce knots the best torches, and spruce roots make tough baskets.
