Northern Tamandua

Description:

I saw this wonderful mammal during a zip line tour in the area of Guanacaste... North Pacific of Costa Rica. The body (including head) is about 50 to 80 cm in length, and it tail is prehensile (40 and 65 cm) and weighs from 3.5 to 7.5 kg. There have 4 long and strong claws on the forefeet and 5 small in the rear. The animal is nocturnal, solitary and mostly arboreal. He spends most of the time in the trees so that their movement on land is quite difficult. Gestation lasts 5 months, after which the female gives birth to a baby.

Habitat:

Rainforests, dry forests, riparian forests, secondary forests and savanna woodlands.
