Blue-Spot Sea Urchin

Description:

Reddish sea urchin with brown quills, about 4 inches/10 cm horizontal diameter, exclusive of spines; shell in five segments, with grooves along seams; blue spots in grooves.

Habitat:

Nearshore tropical waters.

Notes:

Spotted offshore of Nanakuli, Oahu in a penshell bed on a flat sand bottom about 70 feet deep. Original medium photoprint taken using 35mm SLR in Ikelite housing with flash; print later scanned and image saved as digital file.
