Crocodile Snake Eel

Brachysomophis crocodilinus

Description:

The head of this snake eel looks rather monstrous, with sharp teeth in its mouth. They feed on small fish and invertebrates, and grow to about 85cm in length.

Habitat:

Found singly buried in the sand or rubble near coral reefs, with just the head showing. Rarely out in the open during the day.

Notes:

When I saw this snake eel, it was during a day dive and it was completely out on the sand. As I approached, it sluggishly moved away, and when I came too near, it withdrew into the sand in a flash, tail first!
