Goliath stick insect

Description:

Large (250mm) green stick insect with yellow banded legs and head.

Habitat:

This insect has been captive bred. They feed on eucalyptus or acacia trees. They occur in Eastern States of Australia including (rarely) Tasmania and also WA. There is a larger subspecies in Darwin, NT.

Notes:

This is my pet stick insect. It was hatched in captivity from an egg. This is the second largest and heaviest species in Australia

The female is the second largest and the heaviest species in Australia. They grow to about 250mm. The titan stick insect gets a bit longer at 300mm. http://www.bugsed.com/fact_sheets/goliat...

Appears similar--beyond the six legs both types have in common!--to some sort of mantid.

You can buy these in pet stores in the USA. They are a popular pet for young teenagers. (They, like me have not grown old yet.)
Most fun is the spiny leaf insect that I will post soon.
