Scrawled filefish

Aluterus scriptus

Description:

Photo take at -50 ft in a Caribbean reef. This is one of the most beautiful and large file fishes.

Habitat:

This unusual, colorful filefish is usually seen hovering near or swimming over the reef. It is a solitary fish, except during the reproductive period, when they come together to spawn. The scrawled filefish feeds on a variety of invertebrates (including hydrozoans, gorgonians, zoanthids and sea squirts) and plant material (algae, sea grasses).
