Downy woodpeckers are the smallest woodpeckers and can be found year-round throughout the continental United States and southern Canada. At just 6 to 7 inches in length, these small birds can be difficult to spot, but they are popular guests in forests, urban areas, parks and other habitats. Male and female birds look similar, but males have a bright red patch on the back of the head, while females have a black patch.

I spotted this bird while hiking in Clark's Reservation State Park. I hear the tapping and followed it. He was a bit difficult to spot in the branches. It was a good test for my zoom camera.
