Description:

This squirrel has short limbs ,small ears. Gray back.Lighter coloring on underside. Looks like a ground squirrel. More like a Beldings? Not a very common sight here.

I agree with what the Mt. Diablo ranger told you. There were some introductions of the Eastern Fox Squirrel in the greater Bay Area at one time. The Douglas Squirrel (Chickaree) is found at higher elevation in coniferous forest.
