Morelet's Crocodile

Crocodylus moreletii

Description:

This specimen was just over 2m long, a little short of the maximum 3m for the species. Also known as Mexican Crocodile, it can be found in Mexico and throughout Belize and Guatemala. Apparently it looks similar to the American and Cuban Crocodiles, having only been accepted as a separate species in the 1920's. This species is now of "least concern", having been threatened in the past due to habitat loss and hunting for the leather trade.

Habitat:

Mainly freshwater, but can also be found in brackish waters. This specimen was photographed in "Laguna de las Ilusiones", right in the city of Villahermosa.

Notes:

I saw several specimens in this lake, and it seemed like they live there freely and could wonder somewhere else if they so chose. Maybe this happens and sometimes a crocodile wonders through the city centre, but I didn't hear any such stories.
