The first photo is a "Fiddlehead" fern....which are the furled fronds of a young fern, harvested for use as a vegetable. Left on the plant, each fiddlehead would unroll into a new frond.

Moved to plants category. Unfortunately my NZ ferns book is buried deeeep in storage. There are som very knowledgable NZ users on her though. Hopefully one can ID it.
