Dwarf mistletoe

Description:

Dwarf mistletoe is a parasitic plant that is currently having a huge effect in some old growth jack pine forests. Pine trees affected by dwarf mistletoe show irregular growth patterns and generally have an unhealthy look about them.

Habitat:

Old growth jack pine forest

Notes:

Natural fire regimes historically regulated pine stands from becoming as old as they are in some parts of Canada's boreal forests. Human intervention by means of fire supression have allowed for a prime opportunity for this parasite to flourish.
