I think it's a weevil. It was maybe 2-3cm tall and looked distinctly like gonzo from the muppets. It didn't move when I approached it.
Found it sitting on a log.

Cool looking spotting. I agree it does look like Gonzo! Maybe that is where Jim Henson got the idea ? For those not familiar, photo of Gonzo can be seen here.
