Scoliopus bigelovii
Very tiny flowers, almost camouflages into the wet surrounding leaf litter. Most are at the edge of the trail. Two green leaves with parallel veins and purplish spots. Flowers have three petals with two sets of three's coming off (stamens?).
Secondary/ Tertiary Redwood forest, rainy weather months.
These aren't consistent with what I know about Trilliums and Orchids- which are also Redwood species, though they have characteristics that made me think of both as possibilities.

Thanks! I will try to post some habitat pictures for you to see. I know redwood habitats quite well, though this is the first time I have seen this flower. It is quite common on this particular trail in the rainy months- once you see it.
Oh! Thank you for posting this. I love this little plant & it's great species name. It's really nice to see it growing wild. Did you get down close to the flowers at all? They smell a bit like wet dog! Do you have any pictures of the forest you could add to the spotting so we can visualise the habitat?
