This is one of the species belonging to so-call 'fatty' wingless tenebrionid beetles of the genus Pimelia. Their elytra (forewings) are fused so they cannot fly.

Habitat:

These are typical inhabitants of arid environments as this photo suggests (it was found in the desert of west Rajastan).
