Prairie Smoke

Geum triflorum

Description:

This early-blooming plant flowers in the upper Midwest as early as April, sometimes poking up through the snow. It may grow to about a foot in height. Flowers are red. As the seedhead matures long awns reach skyward in a whispy reddish spray giving the plant its name of prairie smoke.

Habitat:

Grasslands and high alpine meadows.
